Natasha Courtenay-Smith - Platinum Business Partner

Partner Diary – My first 6 months with Platinum Business Partners - Natasha Courtenay-Smith Natasha was already a successful businesswoman before joining Platinum Business Partners (PBP) in March 2016. Not only does she have her own website design and digital marketing company, she also designs and sells her own brand of tote bags.

So why would she need support to build her own online retailing business?

Here, Natasha shares her reasons and experience so far.

Why did you decide to join Platinum Business Partners?

I obviously have experience of running online businesses, social media marketing, maximising website traffic and even selling products online, but I’ve always been on my own. This presented me with a great opportunity to do something that complimented my existing businesses while being part of a supportive and like-minded group of people.

What do you want to achieve by having your own ecommerce business?

To date, all of my work has involved trading a lot of my time for money. I do enjoy it but I wanted to find a way to have a better balance, where I can pick and choose who my clients are and also have a degree of income that’s more predictable.

How have you found the training and resources so far?

The training has been really good, especially in helping me to understand another platform and how it works. The online support group is really interactive now and a great source of advice. And I really enjoyed the mentoring.

What products have you started with?

I felt like I wanted to operate in the beauty category. Even though I’m not massively into beauty products, it is an area I am interested in and know something about. And from a consumer point of view, it’s always nice as a woman to find new products. So, I decided this would be the category that I would operate in to start with, but I wanted to be able to stand out. Rather than just offering anti-ageing products, I tried to look for products with a specific ingredient with a high volume of searches so I could try and cut out some of the competition.

What stage are you at now?

I’ve got two products live in the beauty category. I was able to get the first product live within 8 weeks and the second product has been live for just over a month. I deliberately chose not to import these products so that I could start selling them faster.

What are your plans for the next six months?

I’ve got a third product almost ready and samples from three more suppliers on the way. I’m learning that there is always opportunity. You can be doing your product research and think nothing is coming up and then suddenly you head down a path and it’s great. I really enjoy it and get really excited when I find new products. It’s just the beginning and I’m looking forward to what the future will bring.

Mark Greening - Platinum Business Partner

Motivated by wanting to find a way to generate an income that didn’t require all of his time, Mark Greening started looking at new business opportunities. He was about to start building a buy-to-let property portfolio, but still found himself with time on his hands. The problem was, he didn’t know exactly what he was looking for.

When he discovered Platinum Business Partners (PBP), he realised that was it.

What were you looking for in a new business opportunity?

I’ve had businesses before in the retail space, but the return was slow and it took an awful lot of work to generate any income.

But my key motivation was not necessarily financial, it was more about time. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a hard day’s work, but I don’t want to be doing 60 hour weeks or spending all of it away from home.

    What interested you about ecommerce?

I wanted to learn about what’s new in business in terms of the online world. A lot of businesses were going online so this was something of great interest to me – it was another form of business that I didn’t have any experience of, but I did know about retail.

It was also important to me, having got children myself, to teach them about alternative ways of earning a living as opposed to just working for money. And this would give me something to teach them and hopefully hand down to them in the future – not just in terms of the money I make, but the business experience too.

I wanted to show them the way that I could do it differently. Hopefully they can learn from my experiences. So, it’s something I can hand down to them, not just in monetary terms but in experience as well.

Why did you decide to join Platinum Business Partners?

I’m a big believer in learning from others who have already been successful in the same sector or market and I understand franchising - you can go from knowing nothing to producing good returns relatively quickly.

So, the fact that PBP was a franchise, in a sector I knew something about and providing me with a model I could follow without taking up all of my time was perfect.

How did you find the product selection process?

I consider myself fairly lucky in that I already knew which market I wanted to sell in. I’ve been fairly passionate about pets for much of my life and I grew up around animals. So, when we learnt that this was a category that would work, it was most definitely an easy choice.

I am a typical consumer of my own products which makes it easier – I find it more enjoyable looking for products and testing them. It’s not a chore.

How did you find the brand development process?

I had in mind what type of business I wanted to operate. I wanted a premium brand with a natural and safe product.

I took long walks with the dog trying to think of brand names and got the family involved in brainstorming. Eventually we came up with something we liked and our brand was born.

I now feel very proud that we are producing a premium product that consumers can trust.

What part has been the most enjoyable for you?

I’ve just enjoyed it all. I’d always enjoyed business generally before, but I always struggled because I lacked a passion for it. It was all about doing well and making money. I remember looking at PBP and knew that was what I wanted. Everyone trips over an opportunity that will change their life, but instead of dusting myself off and walking on, I stayed put.

It just doesn’t feel like work at the moment and hopefully it never will!

Mark Hammond - Platinum Business Partner

After enjoying a career in the Royal Air Force as an engineer, Mark Hammond went on to build a very successful and global medical packaging business with two partners which he sold in 2014.

The proceeds from the sale afforded him to look at other opportunities. The concept of selling online and the ability to build a business in a relatively short period of time led him to joining Platinum Business Partners in March 2016.

    What interested you about ecommerce?
What really sparked our interest was how enormous the ecommerce market is and the speed of growth compared to offline retail. It’s clear that we as consumers are changing the way we shop and I just felt it was a good time to get involved.

Why did you join Platinum Business Partners?
If you tried to launch this kind of business on your own, you would get no support or guidance. You would be very much alone.

The training so far has already proved that there is a lot to learn and I have been surprised at the number of web-based tools available to help you build and grow your ecommerce business, relevant to your own strategy.

There is also an online support forum and monthly webinars where people have been willing to share their experiences for the benefit of the wider group – and this mentality has been fostered and grown from day one.

How did you find the product selection process?
We were obviously advised to go into a market that we feel passionate about or have some knowledge in, as a pet owner, I decided to start there.

Very quickly we were able to come up with a shortlist of 25 products in the pet supplies market that we thought might work well in our portfolio in the long-term. Selecting product one was quite easy.

We sourced our first two products from one of PBP’s recommended sourcing agents, but also enquired direct with another manufacturer we found so we had something to compare it to – this was an important learning exercise regarding due diligence and quality checks.

We had samples sent to us as they would be to the customer so we could see what the final product was going to be like. It was a strange but good feeling.

Did you enjoy creating your own brand?
That’s been an interesting learning experience. I’m not a marketer by trade or in terms of my skill set so that whole side of things has been new to me, but it was really good fun.

We want to promote that we are happy to use those products ourselves – and have done already on our own pets. That’s our brand promise.

How much time have you been spending on your ecommerce business?
There have been days where I’ve spent a lot of time pursuing particular tasks and then there have been times where I’ve just dipped in for half an hour. You can do this wandering around with an iPad and having a coffee, so the flexibility is great. You can do it as and when you wish or are able to.

What has been the biggest benefit of being part of PBP so far?
Definitely the sharing of minds, knowledge and experience. That ethos is the best part. You don’t feel on your own, you don’t feel isolated and there’s always someone there to help and answer a question or point you in the right direction.
